Carving - Stone Mountain, Georgia

Trip to Stone Mountain

My family decided to go to see the laser show at Stone Mountain park just outside of Atlanta, Georgia last night. It is very interesting to watch the lasers at work. The side of the mountain has a huge carving of three generals of the Civil War riding on their horses. During the show the lasers outline the carvings and then the outlines become animated and one by one the generals start a charge on their horses. They have several other animations and slides that are projected on the side of the mountain as music plays. There are also fireworks that go along with some of the music and animations.

It was also a chance to get a shot of the full moon during the part of the year when it is full and at its closest point to the earth in its orbit. Some of the shots I took are posted below.

Here is a closer view of the carving.

It’s a long way to the top so you can take a cable car ride from the park at the bottom of the mountain up to the top where there is an observation area.

The picture below is of two people standing in the observation area at the top of the mountain. The rock that you can see below them only covers about a third of the distance down to where the carved out area begins.

The weather was really nice. We had been having evening thunder showers and cloudy afternoons but this day ended nicely as you can see from the picture below.

Here is a shot I got of the full moon.

A nice ending to a trip to the park.
