I Have the Blue Moon Blues

Life can really be frustrating sometimes. I went to the grocery store the other night and when I came out into the parking lot I remembered that there was a “Blue Moon” that night. I noticed a few wispy clouds in front of the moon and thought they would be nice in a moon shot. I drove home and got my camera and tripod and went out on the driveway to set them up. I looked up in the sky and realized that the wispy clouds had turned into a solid mass of clouds while I was getting my camera and the moon was completely obscured. I had already had the same problem when I tried to get a shot of the “Super Moon”. I went in and decided I might be able to get a shot the next night. Since I had some spare time I went to the basement and set up some oil and water to shoot. I had been thinking about using a gazing ball I have in my back yard as the background for the shots. I took a few shots and shut everything down and went to bed.

When I got off work the next evening I was driving home and realized another solid bank of clouds were moving in and there would be no moon shots that night either. I went back down to the basement and took some more shots of the oil and water I had set up. As I went through the shots on my computer I realized that dust had collected on the oil overnight and was adding some interesting textures to my shots. Just one of those unplanned things that you run into when nature takes its course. As you look through the shots you will notice some very smooth drops from the first night and then the textured ones from the next night. I could have gone through the shots and cleaned up some of the drops to smooth them out but I like the character that the dust and flaws add to the shots.

Here is the “Oil and Water Universe” I was able to capture.

  1. Yes I did enjoy very much. Just awesome. If not for your description of the process, I would never guess what it was.
